This presidential endowed chair was established in the Organization for Interdisciplinary Research Project, aiming to work as a bridge among disciplines. We are especially working for realizing the "platinum society" that solves the problems of energy and environment, healthcare and its systems, and regional revitalization and empowerment. Our researches are conducted to organize and create the academic background, develop a framework solving social problems based on the structuring of knowledge, and implement them into society.
Our endowed chair had been donated as the first phase in April 2012 by the 5 companies; The KAITEKI Institute, Inc., Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation, FUJIFILM Holdings Corporation, Mitsui Fudosan Co., Ltd. and LIXIL Corporation. In November 2015, Shin-Etsu Chemical Co., Ltd. also participated, and Phase 1 activity finished by the end of March 2017.
As the second phase in April 2017, we started our activities by donations from 6 companies; The KAITEKI Institute, Inc., Mitsui Fudosan Co., Ltd., Shin-Etsu Chemical Co., Ltd., ORIX Corporation, Sekisui House Ltd., and East Japan Railway Company. In March 2021, Toyota Tsusho Corporation also participated, and the second phase activity finished by the end of March 2022.
As the third phase in April 2022, we started our activities by donations from 4 companies; Mitsui Fudosan Co., Ltd., Sekisui House Ltd., East Japan Railway Company, and Toyota Tsusho Corporation.
We are exploring the methodologies to devise the scenario for society to reach its vision by systematizing technology and academic knowledge (seeds) with actual social problems (needs). Many technologies and systems have been developed for solving social problems; the control of environmental loads, the innovation of energy systems, and the actions for low birth rate and healthcare. The interaction of such technologies and systems are complexly intertwined each other as a technology implementation mitigating certain problem can result in the cause of other problems, while the social problems should be solved or mitigated simultaneously to achieve the vision.
First, we are specifying the seeds required for solving social problems comprehensively by analyzing the rationales of such problems. Focusing on "social implementation" of the research achievements, its methodology of implementation is developed for actual players. Through case studies on several regions, a framework conducting the methodologies is constructed with the design of supporting tools for social implementation. In addition, we are aiming to increase the applicability and deployment of our studies by proposing a role model of industry, academia, government, and citizens to utilize and operate them.
It is necessary to raise the value by sharing our research outputs. For that purpose, we will conduct outreaching activities through symposiums and workshops, as well as education for sustainability.
